Bad Times Bring Out The Best Around Here
My big black dog sensed the violence in the equally black clouds that roared north past our home yesterday. Cats, dogs, cellphone, and flashlight all stowed in our tiny “safe” area, I went back outside camera in hand to watch the storm cell fly just beyond my neighborhood. I worried about friends who lived just north of Cookeville in picturesque communities of Dodson Branch, Hardy’s Chapel, Rickman, Windle Community, and the town of Livingston.

Today’s skies are brilliant blue. Dodson Branch, Hardy’s Chapel, Windle Community today – they are pictures of storm aftermath: Damaged homes, downed trees, power lines lying on the ground, debris scattered across the beautiful rolling Tennessee countryside. The communities are also pictures of true Tennessee volunteer spirit: Neighbors and friends pulling together to help each other after a disaster. Restoring power, clearing roads, providing shelter and food, searching and sorting scattered personal treasures, updating family and friends outside the damage zones.

Several friends have texted or emailed that they are okay. Some are still without power, some had property damage. Some in areas farther east and north have not reported back yet. I was fortunate; I just lost power for a few hours. I am also fortunate to live in a place with such a deep sense of community. Even in times like this, the rural Upper Cumberland area of Tennessee is a wonderful place to be.
