When home owners, and buyers, talk about home concerns, termites are usually one of the top five items. When they discuss wood-burning fireplaces and fire pits, wood pile convenience is usually near the top of the list. Ironically, most never realize the contradiction.
Termites love wood. They live in dead wood and don't care where it is located. When fire wood is stacked against a home, under the deck, or in the garage, termites may be hitch-hiking on that wood. It is then a very short trip to the wood on the deck, in the crawl space, and inside the home.
Treating for termites isn't the end of the world, but why create a problem that will cost you money later. Locate your wood stack away from your home to reduce the risk of termites. You'll enjoy those beautiful flames much more if you don't have to pay dearly for them later.
