I just heard that former TN U.S. senator Howard Baker died today at 88. As a news photographer at Nashville’s WSMV Ch. 4 News in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I was lucky enough to cover some of his press conferences and see the man up close.
Baker was many things: senator, presidential chief of staff, attorney. He was also a noted still photographer who often participated, then photo’d, during the same event. He was also the rare official who treated news photographers with professional respect and humor. It was typical of him to swing by the photographers’ gallery before the event, asking why we used a particular tripod or asking to look through the viewfinders of a new line of video cameras. It wasn’t unusual for him to talk at length with shooters from the newspaper to compare his Hasselblad to their Nikons. He understood our jobs and he treated us as peers.
Howard Baker’s acknowledged legacy is long and accomplished. I just want to add my footnote to the list.
